Orkney set to become smart energy island

Orkney Islands Council (OIC) has revealed its support for the creation of a multi-partner £28.5mn project to drive renewable energy generation. Announced on Friday 31 May, the ReFLEX Orkney project is funded by the government through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and will encompass a smart energy island. A virtual energy system will monitor generation, grid constraint and energy demand, where smart control of energy technologies will then seek to manage and improve supply-demand balance. If successful, additional technologies could also be rolled-out as part of the project, such as domestic batteries for homes, larger batteries for businesses and vehicle to grid chargers.
